So You Want to Be a (Successful) WebCam Model?

Below is something a little different than what I usually write, but I felt there was a need for this. I hope you all find something of use in it. Now it might seem like some of the stuff would be commonsense or that I am going a bit overboard. But, I have written it to HELP you. Not me. I want you to succeed. I want you to have an awesome experience while being a Cam Model. You have taken a huge leap toward your own financial security and you deserve to earn a living from your work.

So You Want to Be a (Successful) WebCam Model?

Following are a few pointers on how to make your experience and those of your viewers worthy of your time and their money.

So, you have found the website that you, either found yourself, or someone in the know suggested it to you. You have checked it out and found that it suits your needs and you are now a card carrying member of a WebCam Chat Site. Yay! Now what?

1. COMMUNICATE

You must talk. Its a chat site first. Sure you can just sit there and wait for someone to tip you and then you take off your clothes. Communication is KEY. We humans love to talk. So, before you start think of what interesting things you think might help the hours go by. Also, ask the viewers about their day, life, interests. Share, but never share anything too personal.

2. YOU DON’T KNOW JACK

You don’t know Jack. Literally. You see Jack is just a normal guy, who is on the other side of the world and like you, is a stranger to you, as you are to him. Treat him like you want to be treated. He might not even be Jack. He might be Jill. Treat him/her with respect. Not every Jack is an a-hole. He might have had a bad day. Or that he has saved up enough money to get tokens to give to someone who he thinks deserves it. But, there are also a-holes, but if you are genuine others will help you weed them out of your room.

3. TOKENS

Tokens are not a given. You can’t demand tokens. Remembered its someone’s hard earned cash. Just like you, the viewer has bills. As mentioned above, the viewer decides whether you deserve it or not. But, also, don’t give away stuff for free ie. showing feet, or backside without tokens (you can do a quick flash to tease). All suggestions and requests should come in the form of Tip Request.

4. FIND A FRIEND

Find a Friend. A model who has been at it a couple months longer than you knows will be able to help you get through the bad times. Times when you haven’t made rent or someone close found out that you are secretly a cam model. Or, that one viewer or made you feel like that and you can’t shake the hurt feelings. (A model made me feel like dirt today and thats why I decided to write this as positive thing to help models.)

5. ROOM MODS

Room Moderators. Find a couple who are female (at start) and are not themselves models. Someone who has been on the site for a while and usually you will find its someone else in the room who suggests them. Because, there are genuine viewers who are only too willing to help you succeed. That's right! Viewers want you to succeed. They know who is right to Mod your room.

Technical Stuff:

Light- a room usually needs 3 sets of light (night time-dark room).

We need to see your face.
Back. Behind you there is always going to be a wall, so to make it appear that you aren’t a part of the wall it is a good idea to shine a desk lamp onto the wall -not to close though. If however you are using the room light or sunlight, this is not necessary.
It's important that if you can afford to, get a lamp stand (see pic) with a Diffuser. You are probably wondering what a Diffuser is? A Diffuser is a light with a white cover over it that diffuses the light so that its doesn’t shine directly on your face etc. And make you look like an orange. It softens the glare of the light and helps with how natural you appear on screen. It is a good idea to learn about lighting a room. Talking to a lighting storeperson where they only sell lamps and then go somewhere cheap to buy the lamps if you need to.

Its the best lit rooms that will have the most visitors. There is nothing like scanning through the cam shots and seeing horrible color on beautiful model rooms. If you don't believe me, just do a scan yourself and see which ones you instantly want to enter.

Sound -It is important that you are heard. Just as important as lighting a room if not more.

Make sure that your music is not louder than your voice. The way to check this is by taking out your cellphone and making a recording of the level of music and your voice before you go live. This way you already have the levels set and don’t have to worry about what you sound like or if your music is going to be too loud.
Every model has their own tastes in music. This is a good thing as we all have different tastes. The problem arises when the model hasn’t done #1 above and her speakers are crackling, the viewer who had his headphones in has gone momentarily deaf. Not to mention he partner just woke due to his fright at the sudden onslaught of ear piercing sound. You might think I am talking about some Heavy Metal loving model. No, it has nothing to due with style of music, but the models perception of what is the correct level for a cam room. Please check your levels. Always do a dry run.

6. YOU ARE NOT A WHORE!

Anyone who can work the long hours that you work only using a computer screen with a couple Apps to help, deserves admiration. Not knowing whether you are going to make enough that day or week is an adventurer who has taken the bull by the horns and stepped into the unknown,
Don’t let someone else’s opinion of what a cam model does a belittle your career choice.
Cam Modelling is a Career. Its a JOB. You have to see it as that. Its hard work. Ask any of the successful cammers. Its long hours. Its demanding work. Some days you will work a couple hours. Others you might be up a whole day. Stay Hydrated.
Be Genuine. If you want to connect with strangers from across the world be honest about your situation. People will help if you are struggling, if they believe you are genuine. Don’t try to lie. Remember viewers room from model to model and they talk to models and each other. Some of them have been on the site for years before you started camming. They can tell a fraud.
Make an effort. See #3. If you want to last long as a working model you need to have a Gimmick. By that I don’t mean some fake thing to fool the viewer. I mean, do you play an instrument? Sing? Draw. Paint. Do voices? Anything interesting that is uniquely you. Share that. You need to find that thing that helps you connect with your viewers.
You won’t please everyone. So, don’t try to. Of the 100% that visit your room only 20% will tip. And 50% of that will be less than 20 tokens. 5% of the tippers will be tip to get you naked for that one time and then move to another model. The remaining 5% will will stick will you.

Lets talk about the last 5%. These are guys that care about you as a person, not just someone who gets naked in front of them a world away. They have money that they save every week to spend on just you. It might $5 or $500. But they want to spend it on you. They will wait for you to come on. Because to them, you matter. You are their social outing. Their dinner and movie date. This should not be seen as a bad thing. To these Genuine viewers each token is well spent and you must respect and appreciate the tip no matter the amount. See Step 2. You don’t know Jack. Because if you don’t they will find a model who does and you will have lost a life time tipper because of your action. See Step 3.
YOU ARE NOT A WHORE! I have noticed on some sites that there are a-holes who treat models like they are some kind of object to take out their low self-esteem on. I am happy to say that MFC members are nicer when it comes to the way models are being treated. Especially ‘new models’.
Your body is part of your work. Each part should be utilized to earn you tips.

Having said all that, it should be fun. If you are enjoying yourself, then the viewers will to. But, you are having a bad day, but need the tips. The best thing you can do is open up to the regulars and tell them that you are having a bad day. Remember as you have incited them to be a part of your webcam life, so have they. Share the sadness and you will find genuine care waiting for you.

I have noticed that some of the simple things are missed. Such as on the Homepage. ie. Model ‘Menu’:

Location, you can either leave empty or fill out.
Age, personally I think it is important that you state your age.
Occupation, anything you want, I like the funny ones.
Tags, please use this as it will help when viewers do searches for what they are looking for in a model, ie. in my case: Nerd, Tattoo, Anime, Cosplay.
Images, please add some nice pics of yourself, not scenery, objects or animals.

Okay that's enough. I am sure others and even you models have better suggestions but there you have it.
